Best Year Yet for Atlanta Paddle - All Metrics UP!!!

DATELINE ATLANTA – 2012/13 Platform Tennis Season Recap

By all available measures the 2012/13 platform tennis season in Atlanta was our best ever.

Our court tally rose from 7 to 9 with the addition of the new Windward Lake two court venue in the northern suburb of Alpharetta, a 20 tennis court facility run by Dave Powers and assisted by a generous grant from the APTA. Windward has done a great job with special events and weekly programming to introduce the sport to their many tennis players – they already have their eyes on two more courts and a hut.

Peachtree Paddle, the primary organizing body for the sport around Atlanta, and assisted by the generous support of some 16 sponsor companies, grew its League membership to 155 players, 11 teams and nearly 200 matches played, all setting new records and the website crossed the 80,000 hits mark by season end. Peachtree Paddle hosted two opening exhibition & clinics, one at Cherokee and the other as a grand opening for the new Windward venue. We hosted the 8th annual Peachtree Invitational Tournament and the season ending Championship event, won this year by upstart Windward driven by their terrific player participation rates.

The tournament was oversubscribed for both the women on Friday and the Men on Saturday and Sunday with a record setting total 116 players from 12 states competing. Our volunteer force grew to some 25 people who put on a first class tournament, to which we invite all to attend next year, again scheduled for the last full weekend in January.

Cherokee Town Club, the epicenter for Atlanta paddle, set a new record with roughly 660 matches played on their two courts, with a rising percentage being from women players, where the pro staff, lead by Beth Clay and Frank Thompson, have put great emphasis, greatly assisted by the terrific efforts of Freddy Goldenberg and Sharon LeRoux, among others. In a letter to the Members, the President of Cherokee referred to the club's new sport as our “Very Successful Platform Tennis Program” – quite an honor we all thought!

Looking forward we have new court building discussions with at least six other venues around town, including two large public tennis venues. The PPL has also launched a fund raising initiative to help fund courts at a worthy public venue.

Lastly, we are quite proud and pleased to have Freddy Goldenberg, our tireless and generous supporter of paddle in Atlanta, nominated to join the APTA Board – she will be a GREAT addition.
